Advancing paediatric surgery through education and research

Working Together Document

This document has been written in the context of the Department of Health paper ‘Next Steps on the NHS Five Year Forward View’ published in March 20171.

Dear Colleagues,

As Paediatric Surgeons we work in a complex environment providing specialist and general care for children. Over the last decade the provision of GPS has increasingly been provided in tertiary units as opposed to local DGH’s.

In recognition of the need to improve communication and networking between tertiary centre’s and DGH’s, supporting the local provision of GPS, the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Surgical Specialty Associations collaborated with the FSSA producing this document.

It recommends integration of commissioning in England (Specialist and CCG), local succession planning, adequate CPD, establishment of credible regional networks, integrated local services and 7 day DGH emergency services.

Please promote this document and engage with trusts, commissioners and health boards to turn it from policy to reality.

Richard Stewart
President Elect of BAPS
